ABOUT THE EVENT /

Charles M. (“Charlie”) Beckham served each of the City of Detroit’s last six mayors with distinction.  He spent more than 40 years in service to the city and its residents, and endured one of the most intense onslaughts the federal justice system has ever mounted against a single government official in the city’s history.

His live one-man show will give the audience an intimate glimpse into the life and times of a man who some thought would never recover from the federal prosecution and subsequent incarceration he endured. Even Beckham’s leadership of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, which resulted in the bleakest period of his life, proved to be a stepping-stone to a four-decade career as a trusted advisor and executive manager for each of Detroit’s last six mayors, starting with Coleman A. Young.

Styled after Mike Tyson’s live, one-man on-stage memoir, “The Undisputed Truth,” Beckham will share memories and musings, anecdotes and asides, lessons learned and light-hearted recollections, covering the joys and sorrows of his 70-plus years of life.  Aided by Stephen Henderson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who also happens to be Charlie’s nephew, this on-stage memoir will unfold through a gripping multi-media presentation that is sure to engage and inspire the audience.
